Foods to Eat and to avoid for a healthy smile

Now that SUMMER is finally here (hooray!!) we are able to spend much of our time outdoors. Whether it’s drinks on a patio, a great BBQ or at a Jay’s game, we tend to consume junk food including acidic or sweetened drinks more often.

Although lots of fun for you, these indulgences are troublesome for your teeth. Here are some tips and tricks to help you keep your teeth healthy and looking their best.

Drinking LOTS of water

Water is the best choice to quench your thirst as it has no sugar or calories. Water will also help wash away other acid-producing food and drinks (ie your spiked lemonade at the bar or your jumbo freeze by the pool).

Leafy greens

Leafy greens like spinach and kale, have many health benefits including improving your oral health. They contain calcium and folic acid which can prevent gum disease. An easy way to incorporate them is to throw a handful into your morning smoothie or have a healthy salad for lunch.


Yogurt is high in calcium and protein making it a good pick for the strength and health of your teeth. Probiotics found in yogurt benefit your gums since they crowd out the bad bacteria that cause cavities. Make sure to choose a variety with little added sugar.

Careful with…..

Alcoholic beverages, Sugary sports drinks, Pop, Coffee and Tea.

Alcohol causes dry mouth and dehydration. People who drink a lot of alcohol may find their saliva flow decreases over time. Saliva is super important in protecting our teeth from bacteria that causes cavities. Alcohol is also a risk factor for oral cancers.

Sugary sports drinks and pop lead to erosion and decay. Acids contained in these beverages lead to erosion by decreasing the hardness of the enamel on your teeth. Enamel is the outer protective layer of our teeth as well as the hardest substance found in the human body. The bacteria found in our saliva thrive on the simple sugars found in these beverages which ultimately leads to decay.

As for coffee and tea they are well known for staining your teeth. It only takes one cup of coffee a day to start the staining process. AAAH! How would anyone ever get anything done without a morning coffee??? Not to worry, to reduce cavities and staining try to avoid sugar or cream and brush your teeth after that morning cup of joe
