It’s here!! We are finally embracing the beginning of summer – school holidays, days spent outdoors, patios, camping, cottages and road trips AND the passion that unites the world has returned once again. FIFA World Cup 2018 from Russia will run from June 14th to July 15th. While Canada doesn’t have a team competing, there are few places better to take in all the festivities then in our multicultural city. It doesn’t matter what nationality you are or what country you are cheering for, the World Cup brings people together every four years to celebrate their love of football (soccer for those of us in North America). It is easy to get swept up in World Cup fever alongside die hard supporters in one of Toronto’s local bars or eateries. Depending on where you go you are bound to run into a horde of fans cheering for their native country. Head to Dundas and Dufferin to cheer with Portugal fans. Bloor between Bathurst and Ossington will be rooting for South Korea. Check out this link for the best places to support your team.
This years tournament will have a much different feel with Italy, a perennial power house not qualifying. Also Spain and Portugal, the last two European champions were drawn to play in the same preliminary grouping. Defending champion Germany will play in a group with Mexico, Sweden and South Korea in an effort to become the first country to win back to back titles since Brazil in 1962. The predicted favourites to win this years competition are Brazil, Germany, Spain and France. Who will win? Only time will tell… Enjoy cheering, screaming and rooting for your favourite team!
Now is the time to bone-up on World Cup soccer. FIFA, the governing body for the sport, just awarded the 2026 games to Canada, Mexico and the United States. That’s right, in only 8 short years you can witness all the frenzy in person! Hopefully you will be able to cheer for Canada….
We have our flag collection ready at the office! Come by in your jersey to show who you will be supporting!
